Bloomington, IN
-- The City of Bloomington Police Department is accepting applications for its popular Citizen Police Academy program. Classes will take place on Tuesday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. beginning September 11, 2007. The academy is an 11-week program that will enable participants to experience firsthand how the Police Department operates and performs the day-to-day business of serving and protecting the citizens of the community.

The goal of the program is to provide participants with an understanding of the relationship between citizens and the law enforcement community. The intention is to give citizens an insider's view of law enforcement, to dispel misconceptions and to increase police-community rapport.

Instruction is provided by police officers and will include such topics as: emergency driving, vehicle stops, traffic enforcement, crash investigations, criminal investigations, crowd control, firearms and defensive tactics. Other areas to be covered include Police Department history, uniforms and equipment, districts, roll call, records, dispatch, and the interaction between the Department and the criminal justice system. Emphasis is placed on hands-on subject matter to give participants an in-depth understanding of law enforcement activities.

There is no cost for the program. Class size is limited to 20, and participants must be 21 years of age or older. Because of the program's popularity, applicants must attend all classes. Background checks will be conducted on all applicants.

Applications are available online and at the Police Department. Completed applications must be returned to Captain Mike Diekhoff no later than September 7, 2007.
