Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington will host a grand opening celebration for EverGreen Village, a subdivision of LEED-certified affordable "green" housing units developed by the City's Housing and Neighborhood Development Department (HAND) that features a sustainable storm water system and pervious pavement sidepath.

The ceremony will take place on Wed., April 22, from 1-3 p.m. at 2121 Susie St., near the intersection of Rockport Rd. and Countryview Ln. Speakers from the City and the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will be on hand to discuss the project's significance, both as an effort to create affordable housing and as a sustainability initiative.

Design teams from Veazey, Parrott and Shoulders; Bledsoe, Riggert and Guerrettaz; and JFNew collaborated to transform a challenging landscape into a compact, sustainable community appropriate for large and small families. The 12 houses, each with two to four bedrooms, range from 1,100 to 1,500 sq. ft. Additionally, each home is equipped with solar panels capable of producing 2.16 kilowatts of energy, the result of a generous donation from Duke Energy.

At the grand opening event, the public will be invited to walk the sidepaths, cross a bridge constructed with recycled milk jugs and tour a home furnished with reused items from Habitat for Humanity's ReStore.

For more information on the grand opening, please contact Robert Woolford, Program Manager for the City's HAND Department, at 349-3580.
