Bloomington
, IN - Mayor Mark Kruzan has announced the City's support for a Day of Service on Friday, Sept. 11, which is being promoted by the Indiana Chapter of the Public Interest Research Group (INPIRG). The national student action organization is committed to addressing local, national and global challenges such as climate change, hunger and poverty.

INPIRG has received endorsements from several local businesses and community organizations and is encouraging other student groups on the Indiana University-Bloomington campus to join in the cause. Volunteers will be stationed along Kirkwood and throughout the downtown soliciting money or food donations, all of which will benefit the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Holding the Day of Service in coordination with the 8th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001, is meant to serve as a reminder of the ongoing need for community responsibility and service.

Kruzan is asking residents to participate in raising the much-needed resources.

"I've been greatly impressed by how determined, how selfless and how committed these students are, and I want to encourage the community to really get involved in supporting them in their efforts," said Kruzan.

Julio Alonso, Executive Director at Hoosier Hills, echoed Kruzan's sentiments and expressed his appreciation at being involved in the project.

"Hoosier Hills Food Bank is excited to be partnering with INPIRG and other student organizations for the 9/11 Day of Service," Alonso said. "We are more than honored to be part of our community's activities to help fight community hunger while recognizing the victims of the attacks and all those who volunteered in the aftermath."
