Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Animal Shelter has begun its "Summer of Love" adoption promotion. During the month of July, dog adoptions are half price, adult cats are $20 and kittens younger than one year are two-for-one. Regular adoption fees are $75 for dogs and cats under age five and $55 for dogs and cats five years and older. Included in the fee are spaying or neutering, vaccinations, microchipping and testing for heartworm or feline leukemia/FIV.

"What better way to put some love in your life than to adopt a dog or cat?" said Laurie Ringquist, Director of Animal Care and Control. "Last week we let the community know about our influx of animals and our slow adoptions and we received a tremendous response. We are very grateful to everyone who has come in to adopt, foster and donate. While it has certainly helped, we need to continue promoting our great adoptable animals."

In addition, the shelter is planning its first ever adopt-a-thon to take place from noon to midnight on Saturday, July 24, 2010. Activities and give-aways are planned throughout the day. More details will be released as the date gets closer.

The public can visit adoptable animals at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter located at 3410 South Walnut. The shelter is open to the public Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays from noon until 7 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.

Adoptable animals also can be seen on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon at the Farmers' Market and they can be viewed on the shelter web site at www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter. For more information about adoptable animals call 349-3492.
