Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Animal Shelter is promoting the adoption of shelter animals during the holiday season with a "Home for the Holidays" campaign.

The Shelter and B97 Radio have once again partnered on "The 12 Strays of Christmas" promotion as part of the campaign. Each day from December 8 through December 23, 2011, a new dog and cat will be featured on the B97 and will be able to go home for a reduced adoption fee of $40. Featured animals also will be promoted on the B97's Facebook page at [http://www.facebook.com/#!/b97radio|http://www.facebook.com/#!/b97radio].

As further promotion of the campaign, the Shelter will be hosting a "Home for the Holidays Adopt-a-Thon" weekend beginning Friday, Dec. 16 and ending Sunday, Dec. 18. Adoption fees will be reduced with adopters drawing from Santa's hat to see how much their adoption fee will be discounted. All adopters also will be entered in a drawing for either a dog or cat gift basket.

"Animals are great at spreading cheer during the holidays," said Mayor Mark Kruzan. "I always look forward to the special campaigns our Animal Shelter staff develops, and I am excited to see how successful this one will be. Thank you to B97 for once again partnering with us to improve animal welfare in the community."

Regular adoption fees are $75 for dogs and cats under age five and $55 for dogs and cats five years and older. Included in the fee are spaying or neutering, vaccinations, microchipping and testing for heartworm or feline leukemia/FIV.

"Our goal is to send 200 animals home for the holidays in December this year," said Laurie Ringquist, City of Bloomington Animal Shelter Director. "We know this is an ambitious goal, but we also know how many wonderful pets we have. We hope that people who would like to add a new member to their families will think of adopting a deserving shelter animal." In addition to dogs and cats, the shelter currently has a wide selection of rabbits, guinea pigs and rats available for adoption.

Adoptable animals can be visited at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter, 3410 S. Walnut Street, on Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Adoptable animals also can be seen on the Shelter website at www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter|www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter].
