City of Bloomington Announces 2017 Blooming Neighborhood Celebration

Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington has announced its 2017 Blooming Neighborhood Celebration on Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Farmers' Market, 401 N. Morton St. This will be the 17th annual gathering meant to celebrate the spirit, work and success of Bloomington neighborhoods. The theme for the celebration is "In the Bag!," and will feature what is happening in local neighborhoods through several activities:

  • "In the Bag"- Bloomington neighborhoods have it "in the bag" when it comes to great people, knowledge and resources that make local neighborhoods a vibrant place to live. Each participating neighborhood will receive a "HAND Bag" that can be used to collect ideas for neighborhood associations to use in their organizations' efforts.

  • "My Neighborhood Pot Luck Idea!" - Neighborhoods are encouraged to contribute their favorite ideas for successful neighborhood projects to be compiled into a Bloomington Pot Luck Idea book. A template titled "My Neighborhood's Pot Luck Idea" is available at bloomington.in.gov or by contacting Vickie Provine at provinev@bloomington.in.gov or 812-349-3505. Previous project examples include little libraries, Thursday community dinners and community gardens. Residents can join HAND in helping our fellow Bloomingtonians by sharing how they have made a neighborhood project work.

  • Neighborhood Grant List - HAND has created a list of all neighborhood HAND grants that have been awarded since 1998. Each neighborhood will receive a copy of the grant list at the Blooming Neighborhoods Celebration, so residents can learn from and ask questions about other successful neighborhood projects.

  • Preservation Tool Kits - Visit with Historic Preservation Program Manager, Bethany Emenhiser, who will offer a Preservation Tool Kit to participants, including a list of local professionals who have experience working with historic homes, maps and directions for self-guided walking tours, information on local historic designations, and much more!

  • Let's Green our Neighborhoods - Gain tips and tricks for promoting sustainability, efficiency and affordability in neighborhoods with guidance from the City's Sustainability Coordinator and the Monroe County Energy Challenge.

Please contact Vickie Provine at provinev@bloomington.in.gov or 812-349-3505 for more information about the Blooming Neighborhood Celebration and to register your neighborhood.
