Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Animal Care and Control Division will celebrate June as Adopt A Shelter Cat Month with two-for-one cat adoptions, joining shelters across the country in drawing attention to the high number of cats and kittens in urgent need of lifelong homes.

In addition to the fee discount, adopters will receive a free bag of cat supplies sponsored by the Monroe County Humane Association that includes food, a bowl and a toy. The two-for-one adoption fees also will be available through the month of July as the Shelter looks to encourage adoptions in during months when the most cats and kittens are taken in. In June and July of 2008, the Shelter took in 593 cats.

"The goal of this promotion is to raise awareness not only about the number of cats and kittens available for adoption at the shelter but also about the importance of spaying and neutering to prevent unwanted litters," said Laurie Ringquist, Director of Animal Care and Control.

Regular adoption fees are $75 for a cat under age five and $55 for a cat five years and older. Included in the fee are spaying or neutering, vaccinations, microchipping and testing for feline leukemia and FIV.

Last year, 82 cats were adopted in June and another 101 were adopted in July. The shelter averages 68 cat adoptions per month and has cats and kittens of all ages, sizes and colors available. Most cats enjoy the company of another cat, and kittens especially enjoy having a playmate.

The public can visit adoptable animals at the City Animal Shelter located at 3410 South Walnut. The shelter is open to the public Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays from noon until 7 p.m., and Sundays from 1-4 p.m.

Adoptable animals also can be seen on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon at the Farmers' Market and they can be viewed on the shelter web site at www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter.
