City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility Breaking down the Barriers Accessibility Awareness Event

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) celebrated downtown Bloomington's accessible businesses yesterday, Wednesday, April 19, by awarding several with an AccessAbility decal and offering thanks to many others (35 in all).

The Council for Community Accessibility's AccessAbility decal program was established in 1993 to survey and recognize local businesses that are accessible to persons with disabilities. Any business can obtain a decal if the establishment meets accessibility guidelines, which address parking, access route, entrance, common areas, and restrooms. Those businesses that are awarded the AccessAbility decals can display them in their windows or on their doors, and in addition will be listed on the City's website in the B Clear Open Data portal.

The following ten downtown businesses received a decal:

· Buskirk Chumley Theater: 114 E. Kirkwood Ave.

· Opie Taylor's: 110 N. Walnut St.

· Lil' Bub's: 236 N. Morton St.

· Gather: 101 W. Kirkwood Ave, Suite 112

· Inner Light: 101 W. Kirkwood Ave, Suite 124

· Main Source: 101 W. Kirkwood Ave, Suite 116

· Chico's: 102 N. Walnut St.

· Seaview Outfitters: 114 N. Walnut St.

· The Green Nursery: 101 W. Kirkwood Ave., Suite 107

· Cup & Kettle Tea Co.: 208 N. Walnut St., Suite 100

Also receiving decals were Aver's Pizza, 1285 S. College Mall Rd., and the City of Bloomington Utilities building at 600 E. Miller Dr.

Besides decal awardees, more than two dozen businesses were thanked by CCA members with balloons, sweets, words of appreciation, and a bit of wild cheering.

The CCA's mission is to promote education and public awareness of accessibility needs for people with disabilities.
