[image:7729,right]Bloomington, IN -- Mayor Mark Kruzan, City Clerk Regina Moore and City Council Representative Susan Sandberg are among the community volunteers taking part in Jumpstart's Read for the RecordĀ® on Oct. 7. The goal of this nationwide campaign is to set a new world record for the largest shared reading experience on a single day.
Monroe County Community School Corporation, Pinnacle School, The Project School, the Boys and Girls Clubs and The Rise will take part by having community volunteers read to students in grades K-1. A generous donation by the Pearson Foundation through the Agency for Instructional Technology will provide books for each MCCSC elementary school as well as the libraries of other participating schools and agencies. In the process, the City of Bloomington, Agency for Instructional Technology and the Pearson Foundation hope to draw attention to the growing crisis in early childhood education in America, that half of today's children from low-income neighborhoods are one to two years behind their peers in reading comprehension and grammar.
This year, record breakers will read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. This book recounts the tale of a boy waking up to discover snow has fallen overnight. The day long campaign will be kicked off on NBC's TODAY show and will be followed by large and small reading events organized by individuals, schools, libraries, government organizations and local businesses nationwide. A presentation of books for every MCCSC elementary school library will take place at Fairview Elementary School at 2:30 p.m. following the book readings.
Now in its fifth year, Jumpstart's Read for the RecordĀ® also celebrates the start of Jumpstart's school year. Jumpstart's year-round program connects children in need with trained adults who work with them throughout the year to ensure they enter school ready to succeed.
For additional information or to participate next year, contact Beverly Calender-Anderson, City of Bloomington Safe and Civil City Director, at 349-3560 or [mailto:safeandcivil@bloomington.in.gov].
