Bloomington
, IN - The City of Bloomington's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission has announced its annual Web Design Contest for students in elementary, middle and high schools.

The contest is open to students in both the Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) and the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corporation (RBB), and contest information can be found on each organization's web site, www.mccsc.edu and www.rbbsc.k12.in.us respectively.

The deadline for entries is Monday, Dec. 7. Students are encouraged to use Web design to answer the question "If Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today, what advice would he give to President Barack Obama?"

"I hope students take this opportunity to learn about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by participating in the Web design contest," said Mayor Mark Kruzan. "This is a fun way to learn, and students are eligible for prizes. We welcome the participation again this year of our friends in the RBB schools."

Text, graphics, art, audio and video may all be incorporated in designs. Judging will be based upon relevance to the theme, quality and cohesiveness of the Web design and writing, use of graphics, organization, and ease of navigation. Last year's entries are available for viewing at www.mccsc.edu/mlkjbcc.html.

Graduate students in the Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing will serve as judges. Winners will be awarded cash prizes and recognized at a reception on the King Holiday in January. The reception will take place at First United Methodist Church, 219 E. 4th Street, beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18, 2010, and all participants are invited to attend.

Contest winners also will be recognized at the King Birthday Celebration, also held on January 18 and beginning at 7 p.m. at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, 114 E Kirkwood Ave.

Information about the Web design contest and other MLK events is available online at www.bloomington.in.gov/cfrd, or by calling Craig Brenner, Special Projects Coordinator in the City's Community and Family Resources Department, at 349-3471.
