Bloomington, IN -- In recognition of national Adopt-A-Dog Month and the City of Bloomington's continuous efforts to promote sustainable living, Mayor Mark Kruzan is recommending the community go green and adopt a shelter dog.

"The Animal Shelter is full of great mixed breed dogs waiting to be placed into a new home. Please don't support the breeding of more dogs when there are already so many available in shelters like ours," said Kruzan. "Adopting from a shelter will give you a loving friend and help alleviate pet overpopulation in the community."

The city is promoting the month with half-price adoptions throughout October. Fees, which cover a first round of vaccinations, a free visit to a local veterinary office, heartworm testing, microchip identification and spay/neuter surgery, will be $37.50 for dogs younger than 5 years old (normally $75) and $27.50 for those 5 years and up (normally $55).

"Hybrid models of a wide variety of sizes and combinations of breeds are available at the Shelter," said Director, Laurie Ringquist. "Hybrids often demonstrate the best of both breeds and the shelter can help you find just the right match."

Adoptable animals can be visited at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter, 3410 S. Walnut Street, on Mondays, Wednesday, Thursdays and Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m., Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Adoptable animals also can be seen on Saturday mornings at the Bloomington Community Famers' Market from 9 a.m. to noon and on the Shelter website at [www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter|www.bloomington.in.gov/animalshelter]. For more information, please contact the Animal Shelter at 812-349-3492.
