Historic Preservation Month Events

Bloomington, Ind. - May is National Preservation Month and in recognition, the Bloomington Historic Preservation Commission and Monroe County Historic Preservation Board of Review invite the public to two free events highlighting the Covenanters and their role in local history. Preservation organizations, whether large or small, government or nonprofit, will celebrate history and historic places this month as an opportunity to reflect on local history.

Rosemary Miller Lecture: Who were the Covenanters Anyway? - Friday, May 19th

Presented by Richard Holdeman, Senior Pastor of the Bloomington Reformed Presbyterian Church, this 2017 Rosemary Miller Lecture will focus on the early-1800s anti-slavery group of Scotch Irish ancestry that had a profound impact on the founding and growth of Bloomington and Monroe County. It will take place at 7:00 p.m. in City Council Chambers.

Covenanter Cemetery Guided Tours - Saturday, May 20th

Guided tours will run from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. departing every hour and half hour. Tour goers will learn more about influential Covenanter movers and shakers through the stories of those buried at the cemetery. While the earliest grave dates from 1838, visitors may recognize many names still prominent in the community today. The cemetery is located at the northeast corner of Moores Pike/Hillside Drive and High Street. Parking is available at the tennis courts .2 miles east on the south side of Moores Pike.

In addition, celebrate Bike Month and Historic Preservation Month together in collaboration with the City's Planning & Transportation Department and the B-Town Free Parking Squad. On Wednesday, May 10 take an easy 6-7 mile bike tour of Bloomington's Historic Districts. Meet at Showers Plaza, 401 N. Morton St., at 6:00 p.m. to depart at 6:15 p.m.
