City of Bloomington, Indiana

City of Bloomington recycling is now single stream and picked up weekly! Single stream recycling means that residents can throw all of their recyclable materials into the same bin. Residents no longer need to separate their fiber materials (cardboard, paper, etc.) from other recycling. All recycling will go into a single cart provided by the City.

Households should set out their recycling by 5:00 a.m. on their designated sanitation pickup day. Magnets with your trash and recycling pickup schedules are sent annually to each residence. If you do not have a magnet, please call the Sanitation Department at (812) 349-3443 and one will be mailed to you.

Recycling Carts

The City of Bloomington Sanitation Department provides one recycling cart (either a 35, 64 or 96 gallon container) per city household, at no cost to the resident, regardless of the cart size selected. All recyclables must fit into the cart. If you would like to change the size of your recycling cart, there is a fee of $50 that will be reflected on your next City of Bloomington Utilities statement.

All commercial properties, including businesses, apartment complexes, housing developments with privately owned streets and apartment complexes/houses with more than four (4) units in them are exempt from the curbside recycling program.  If you live in one of these buildings or complexes, please contact your property manager regarding recycling options. You can also contact the Monroe County Solid Waste District at (812) 349-2020, or visit gogreendistrict.com, to learn more about or their recycling facilities that are located throughout Monroe County.

If you have questions or need more information regarding your recycling cart, please contact the Sanitation Department at (812) 349-3443, or send an email to sanitation@bloomington.in.gov.

Placement of Carts

The placement of carts is very important in order to guarantee collection service. Carts must be 4 feet away from any obstacles, including mailboxes, other carts, overhead wires, trees, etc. Carts must also be 10 feet away from vehicles. The lid on your cart must be fully closed.  All carts must be placed at the curb by 5:00 a.m. on your day of pickup. Failure to comply with these guidelines could result in a missed pickup.

*** Please note: after pickup, your cart must be removed from the curb on the same day of pickup.

Storage

Please store your carts in a covered area such as a garage or shed. If this is not possible, store them outdoors on the side or rear of your housing structure.

Cart Selection Changes

If a customer finds they need a smaller or larger cart for either trash or solid waste than they originally requested, the carts can be exchanged for a different size and will be assessed a $50 fee.

If you change your cart size, the City will make all efforts to have it delivered to you by the next billing cycle.  The change in cost will be reflected on your next billing cycle.

Electronics Recycling

For a $20.00 fee, the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District offers year-round electronics recycling (TV's, Computer Monitors, Laptops, Tablets) Tuesday through Saturday at the Hazardous Materials facility at the South Walnut Recycling Center located at 3400 S. Walnut St. and at all Rural Recycling Centers. The District also accepts any item that requires an electric cord or a battery to operate that do not have a screen free of charge. No electronics are placed in landfills and nothing is illegally exported to other nations. Electronics are transported and treated in accordance with RCRA guidelines. Please call 812-349-2848 for more information.

Stolen, Lost, Misplaced or Damaged Containers

Each cart has a serial code that links your new solid waste and recycling carts to your specific household. This is done through Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. City staff will be responsible for making repairs to damaged carts and will work with residents when carts are stolen or misplaced. If a cart sustains damage caused by City services, the City will cover the cost of replacement. All other damages to the cart such as vandalism or mutilation will result in a $50 charge to the resident for a full cart replacement.
