Bloomington Fire Department

The Bloomington Fire Department (BFD) was established as a paid department in 1900 and currently serves the community with 117 employees, located at 5 stations, responding to over 6,000 emergencies per year. BFD provides fire suppression, technical rescue, and emergency medical response capabilities to City residents and visitors, Indiana University, and surrounding communities.

BFD's Mobile Integrated Healthcare program is designed to fill gaps in the local healthcare system by providing non-emergency care directly to patients in their homes or communities. The program focuses on reducing unnecessary emergency room visits and hospital readmissions, particularly for patients with chronic conditions. The MIH team, which includes Community EMTs, works to manage patients' health and reducing the burden on emergency services.

The Bloomington Fire Department is overseen by the Board of Public Safety.
