Mayor Believes ADUs are “Step Forward for the City”

On Wednesday night, City Council approved an accessory dwelling units (ADU) program that Mayor John Hamilton sees as an important step forward in the City’s efforts to provide affordable housing options.

“I advocated for a program with greater flexibility, but I am pleased that this administration successfully worked with City Council to move one more option for affordable housing forward. ADUs can benefit some of the thousands of residents waiting for this kind of opportunity for safe, affordable housing,” stated Hamilton.  

Mayor Hamilton announced his Affordable Housing Strategy for the City of Bloomington last summer, which included ADUs. Since then the City of Bloomington has continued to make progress in its efforts to provide more affordable housing as dictated by the City’s Comprehensive Plan and long-term affordability goals.

“I encourage anyone who would like to pursue an ADU on their property to reach out to the City Planning and Transportation department - they stand ready to assist and guide potential ADU creators through the process,” advised Hamilton.

Also last night, Mecca Cos. Inc. received approval for a rezone of 8 acres for the development of a 146-unit housing complex, 102 of which will be affordable for at least 30 years. At least 73 units will continue as affordable for 99 years.

“Housing projects of any type take time to conceive, time to design, time to approve and time to construct. We want people in need of affordable and workforce housing in this community to know we will continue to push these efforts forward every day I am in office. We know the need is urgent,” the mayor commented.
