What to Consider Before Becoming a Foster:

  • While BACC can provide you with everything you need to foster an animal, there are some items we may not always have on hand such as cleaning supplies, bedding, wet food, toys and treats.
  • BACC will determine appropriate medical treatment and can provide medications/treatment for treating upper respiratory infections, heartworm, kennel cough, and for minor injuries.
  • BACC provides all formula for neonatal foster puppies and kittens.
  • We recommend ensuring that your resident pets are inoculated against the more common contagious diseases, e.g., distemper, parvo, kennel cough, etc., prior to bringing your foster animal home.
  • The background of your foster companion may not be known, especially in the case of those who come to the shelter as strays. Guardians of relinquished companions do not always complete a thorough personality profile on those companions.
  • It is difficult to predict how long a foster companion will be in your care. While the goal is for an animal to stay in a foster home until they are adopted, we understand that life can prevent that from happening.  We do generally ask for a commitment of at least two weeks.

Foster Program Policies:

  • All decisions regarding medical treatment will be made by Bloomington Animal Care and Control. Should the companion animal in your care become ill, injured, or lost, contact the Shelter immediately. After-hours emergency numbers will be provided to you.
  • All decisions regarding adoption of fostered companions will be made by the staff of City of Bloomington Animal Care and Control.
  • Foster cats are never allowed outdoors.
  • Foster dogs are never permitted to go to dog parks or engage in play with unknown dogs.
  • If you can no longer care for your fostered companion, the companion must be returned to the Shelter. Foster guardians cannot re-home their fostered companions, unless they have the Foster Coordinator's approval.
  • All local and state ordinances pertaining to companion animals must be observed.
