City of Bloomington Fire Department Offers Tips on Fireworks Safety

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Fire Department and the Fire Prevention Bureau remind everyone about the importance of safety when using fireworks this Fourth of July season. The Fire Department has outlined some tips below to help keep fireworks users and their families safe.

City Fire Prevention Officer Scott Smith said, "We encourage everyone to follow all safety guidelines and fireworks laws, which are put in place to protect them from injuries. Fireworks are a big part of Independence Day celebrations for many of us, but they need to be used wisely and with proper supervision."

Smith advises never letting children handle, play with or light fireworks. When buying fireworks, make sure they come from reliable, licensed fireworks dealers, and they are stored in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Only use fireworks outdoors in a clear, open area and never aim, point or throw them at another person. Keep children and adults a safe distance from the shooting site. Never alter any fireworks or attempt to make your own fireworks. Light only one firework item at a time and do not attempt to relight or fix a "dud."

As an extra precaution, have a fire extinguisher, water supply, hose or bucket of water nearby. Be cautious when lighting fireworks when it is windy and never smoke when handling fireworks.

"Safety is the number one priority in our community," Smith said. "Using proper precautions when handling fireworks will help ensure a safe holiday celebration, without serious accidents and injuries."

The following state laws regulate fireworks in Indiana:

• Only individuals 18 years or older may purchase fireworks.

• In general, fireworks may be discharged on holidays from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. Otherwise, fireworks may be discharged from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

• Fireworks may be discharged only on the user’s personal property, the property of someone who has granted permission or at special discharge locations.

• Know the laws and obey them. Penalties are now in place for violation of Indiana's fireworks laws.
