Alcohol Manufacturing Facilities Information

Wine, distilleries, and breweries run the risk of introducing potentially hazardous substances into the sanitary sewer. These can include solids, sulfides, and substances that create drastic changes to the pH of the wastewater, which can be discharged during the fermentation process. Issues from these types of discharges include costly damage or corrosion to the sewer pipes and damage to the wastewater treatment facility. In order to prevent these issues the City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) utilizes its Industrial Pretreatment Program and the City of Bloomington Municipal Code Title 10 Wastewater to set forth Best Management Practices (BMPs) for alcohol manufacturing facilities.

The BMPs are preventative measures that can be taken in order for a facility to prevent contaminants rather than trying to eliminate them after being mixed with water to prevent improper discharge. These steps can not only help to ensure that compliance of the set effluent limits by the CBU, but can reduce pollution and improve operations.
