City of Bloomington, Indiana

closed: Resolved #187271

Traffic Suggestions:

Other: Please consider traffic calming measures along Highland from Hillside to Winslow park - the path descends southwards, is curving, and speeding is too common. There are many children in the area for the Y, parks, gardens, schools, etc.

Referred the resident to the resident-led traffic calming program, an upcoming neighborhood greenway on Thornton/Arden that travels through this corridor, and a potential future project along Highland.

Lyla, Thank you for reaching out about creating a more comfortable space for those who walk and roll along and across S. Highland Ave. In the City's Transportation Plan, S. Highland from Thornton to Winslow is marked as a Phase II priority project. Though there is no current timetable on design or construction of bike/ped infrastructure in this area, it is certainly on our radar as an area to prioritize for future projects. The City is, however, beginning the design and public outreach process for the E. Thornton/Arden Dr. Neighborhood Greenway, which will include the Highland/Thornton intersection. Along with this project, we will be taking traffic counts on Highland and Maxwell to determine how to create comfortable crossings at these intersections. Linked here is the Thornton/Arden project website: https://bloomington.in.gov/engineering/projects/thornton-arden One avenue that you could go down if interested is the resident-led traffic calming program. This program was created for proactive residents like yourself to create slower traffic along residential streets. While Highland is categorized as a Neighborhood Connector and requires extra permissions to install traffic calming, it would certainly raise awareness to traffic speeds and volumes along this corridor. Thank you again for reaching out, and I would be happy to answer any further questions. Best, Hank Duncan
