City Announces Nighttime Closure of Second Street for B-Line Trail Construction

Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department announced today that nighttime construction for the B-Line Trail crossing at Second Street will occur Monday through Friday, July 19-23 and July 26-30. Second Street will be closed from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. from Rogers Street to South College Avenue, and at Morton Street during that time.

Construction work will consist of removing and replacing pavement, installing stormwater piping, creating concrete curbs and sidewalks, and constructing a B-Line Trail crossing median on Second Street.

City officials estimate completion of the construction will take two weeks, as opposed to an estimated four weeks if Second Street were to be closed during daytime hours. Emergency services staff at Bloomington Hospital, located on Second Street west of the closure areas, also preferred a nighttime closure.

The second and final B-Line Trail construction phase will extend the trail from the downtown section (6/10 mile) completed in June 2009. The project includes the trail section from the west side of Rogers Street to Adams Street (7/10 mile) and from the north side of Second Street to Country Club Drive (1.75 miles) through the City's recently acquired property, known as the McDoel Railroad Switchyard. Construction is scheduled for completion by late summer 2011.
