City of Bloomington Announces 2011 Buskirk-Chumley Theater Grant Recipients

Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington's Department of Parks and Recreation and BEAD announce that 12 community applicants will each receive subsidized use of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater for one day during 2011 through the Buskirk-Chumley Theater Grant Program.

The following is a list of grant recipients with a brief description of each project:

  • Arthur Murray Dance Studio: "Dancing with the Celebrities", a dance competition in which local celebrities compete to raise money for local charities.
  • Bloomington Hospital Positive Link: the National LGBTI Health Summit which will focus on improving the emotional, physical, spiritual, intellectual, psychological, environmental, and social health and wellness of LGBTI people.
  • City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission: the community's largest event celebrating Dr. King's birthday, his contributions and the acceptance of diversity in Bloomington.
  • City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department: "60 Seconds to Win", A special summer event based on the television game show, "Minute to Win It."
  • City of Bloomington Volunteer Network: "Be More Awards", which recognizes exceptional volunteers during a community-wide celebration of volunteerism.
  • Community Kitchen of Monroe County, Inc.: "Bloomington Chef's Challenge," a fundraiser featuring three area chefs competing to create the best dish in one hour using a secret ingredient and food donated by local farmers.
  • Daniel Stein: "Pfeffer", a Klezmer and Yiddish Tango music project during Tango Awareness Month that will promote ties between Latin American and Jewish communities.
  • Humanetrix Foundation: "The Combine", a conference which aims to increase tourism; foster Bloomington's economic development, and encourage social growth within the technology field in Indiana.
  • Mary Norman and Julie Thomas, a community performance of "Vagina Monologues" that raises money for Middle Way House which provides assistance to women who experience domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
  • TEDxBloomington: "The Wisdom of Play Conference", a one-day event that features internationally renowned speakers presenting on how wisdom and play intersect.
  • USA International Harp Competition: debut concert of the 8th USAIHC Gold Medalist Agnes Clement.
  • Youth Theater: A summer production that will provide local youth with the chance to develop and showcase their musical and dramatic talents.
