Bloomington, IN - The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department has closed the [Griffy Lake|griffylake] boathouse, effective today, due to low water levels in Griffy Lake.
Lack of rainfall during the past month has resulted in too little water in Griffy Lake to float the canoes, rowboats, and kayaks that were available for rent at the boathouse. The boat ramp used to launch privately owned watercraft is not officially closed, although most boat owners will find there is not enough water to launch any but the lightest, flat-bottomed boats.
The restrooms next to the boathouse will remain open for use during daylight hours.
Steve Cotter, natural resources manager with the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department, said the department anticipates that contractors will begin draining the remainder of the water in Griffy Lake later this month to facilitate repairs to the dam and sluice gate at the west end of the lake.
