Bloomington Arts Commission announces October 2012 Arts Project Grant Program recipients

Bloomington Arts Commission announces October 2012 Arts Project Grant Program recipients
Bloomington, Ind. - Organizations in the Bloomington community submitted grant applications for arts programs and projects through the Arts Commission's semi-annual Arts Project Grant Program and were evaluated via a numerical scoring system in three categories: artistic quality, community impact and organizational capacity. A total of 14 projects received the highest scores and were awarded funding by the Arts Commission:
Bloomington Chamber Singers: $975 for their spring performance of Bach's "B Minor Mass," featuring musicians from the Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra.
Bloomington Playwrights Project: $1,000 for its youth BPP MiniPlay contest and camp, which encourages elementary, middle and high school students to write and submit original 10-minute plays.
Bloomington Symphony Orchestra: $975 for its December family concert, "Peter and the Wolf and the Giant Jam Sandwich."
Bloomington Winter Farmers Market: $800 to support the Music at the Market program that will feature 32 artists during the winter market season.
Cardinal Stage Company: $950 for the development of its new plays program, First Stages, which will focus on new plays unique to Bloomington.
Gallery Walk Group: $1,000 for the 2013 Gallery Walk season.
The Harmony School: $964 for the design and installation of a solar panel tree sculpture to be located on the school's public grounds.
The Lotus Education and Outreach Foundation: $1,000 for the Power of Pattern project at the Lotus Blossoms and Lotus World Music and Arts Festival.
The Pinnacle School: $896 for its public art show, "The Faces of Dyslexia and ADHD."
Raas Royalty: $817 in support of its Indian dance competition to be held at the IU Auditorium in February 2013.
Rhinos: $495 for its first holiday art show and youth media program open house.
USA International Harp Competition: $876 for its next annual recital series, which will feature internationally renowned harpist Naoko Yoshino.
Voces Novae: $750 for its March concert "Apres moi, le Deluge," a concerto written for cello and chorus in response to Hurricane Katrina.
WonderLab Museum: $1,000 for its Science of Art program, which takes place on the first Friday evening of each month.
These arts projects will bring in more than $70,000 in additional private investment and reach an estimated 30,000 people in the Bloomington community. The next cycle of applications for Arts Project Grants will be due April 1, 2013. This project is another effort under the City's strategy to leverage and expand the economic development potential of the arts in Bloomington. According to the 2012 Americans for the Arts study, Bloomington's nonprofit arts sector contributes $72.3 million to the local economy annually through direct spending by arts organizations and their audiences.
