BEAD celebrates WFHB history with June atrium exhibit

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) is exhibiting historical documents and photographs from WFHB Bloomington Community Radio in the Atrium of City Hall, 401 N. Morton St. WFHB Bloomington Community Radio is celebrating its 20-year anniversary of being on the air. The organization was founded in 1975 and aired its first broadcast on January 4, 1993.

The exhibit will be on display during June from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, as well as evening and weekend hours when City Hall is open for meetings.

The mission of WFHB Radio is to provide an open forum for community members to explore issues and events affecting south central Indiana and beyond. WFHB believes this should include open media access for all community members. The station's programming focuses on including diverse perspectives and strives to challenge cultural and intellectual assumptions. The WFHB News Department relies on the collective efforts of more than a hundred community volunteers contributing to its programming as reporters, correspondents, show hosts, producers and engineers. Through community support the news department has grown into a thriving independent media center, empowering people from all walks of life to be active producers of independent media instead of passive consumers.

This project is another effort under the City's strategy to leverage and expand the economic development potential of the arts in Bloomington. According to a 2012 Americans for the Arts study, Bloomington's nonprofit arts sector contributes $72.3 million to the local economy annually through direct spending by arts organizations and their audiences.
