City Stormwater Art Project Aims to Raise Awareness of Relationship Between Storm Drains and Drinking Water

Bloomington, Ind. -  The City of Bloomington Utilities recently launched the Stormwater Art Project to help build awareness of the relationship between stormwater and drinking water. The program is a collaboration between the City, Harmony School students, and various campus and community events.  
 
Launched late last month, the pilot program focused on Lotus World Music & Arts Festival. Students at Harmony worked with the City and the Lotus Education & Arts Foundation to create artwork and build stencils that were used to paint storm drains in front of various festival venues.  A Harmony team of nine worked together to broaden their skillsets to include street safety and traffic, preparing concrete, mapping storm drains, and more.
 
The next Stormwater Art Project is a collaboration with the IU Department of Chemistry in advance of Science Fest 2017, which takes place on October 21. Stenciling is slated for October 19 and will feature special Rainworks paint that is only visible when wet.
 
“Water quality has been a focus point for our administration, and we look forward to this new approach to sharing the direct impact of storm drain pollutants on our water supply,” said Mayor John Hamilton.
