City of Bloomington Utilities Issues Sanitary Sewer Overflow Advisory

Bloomington, Ind. — The City of Bloomington Utilities (CBU) has issued a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) advisory for the following area after an SSO was confirmed on Friday, June 29.

  • 1700 block of South Walnut Street

A City of Bloomington Utilities employee performing an unrelated task in this area first smelled, then observed evidence of untreated waste in a nearby open stormwater channel.  A closer look revealed that somehow the casting of a manhole had been knocked off, causing the normal flow of wastewater through this particular manhole to become impeded, resulting in the SSO.

CBU staff is working to establish a timeline for when this SSO first occurred. The estimated flow from this SSO is still to be determined.

Residents in the aforementioned area are advised to take precautions should they come into contact with untreated sewage that may have accumulated as a result of this overflow.  Any individual who has come into direct contact with untreated sewage is advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly.

The City of Bloomington Utilities is committed to a more efficient and reliable wastewater collection and treatment system and reducing the number of sanitary sewer overflows is a major emphasis in that effort.

The City of Bloomington Utilities also is committed to transparency with respect to the residents of this community. This includes issuing public advisories in the event a confirmed sanitary sewer overflow has occurred.
