Convention Center Expansion Proceeds with Community Engagement Period

Bloomington,  Ind. - The Convention Center Steering Committee for Accountability, on behalf of the City of Bloomington and Monroe County Government, invites the community to attend a public forum on Wednesday, March 6 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Monroe Convention Center (302 S. College Ave.) to provide input and ask questions regarding the Convention Center expansion project. In addition, community members may contribute questions, feedback, and comments at https://bloomingtonmonroeccc.blogspot.com/, where updates about the project will also be posted.  

The blog and the public forum are aspects of a multi-faceted public engagement effort that will inform the drafting of the project’s conceptual design. Over the course of three days (March 5-7), project architects Convergence Design/Schmidt Associates will hold interviews with over 300 stakeholders who have been collaboratively identified by both City and County. The public forum on Wednesday evening invites feedback from the community at large.

After integrating public and stakeholder feedback gathered during these three days, the design team will coordinate a Concept Design Charrette April 16-18 using tools including a 3D massing model, sketches, and a puzzle piece exercise to consider the convention center site in the context of adjacent land and structures, and in keeping with the planning vision for the area. Community members will be invited to review the designs-in-progress over the course of open house sessions each day. The full period of public engagement, including the charrette, will contribute to the creation of a concept design for the convention center by the end of May.  A specific architectural design, leading to blueprint development, will evolve over the course of the following year after extended study and continuous public input.

Stakeholders being invited to speak with the design team March 5-7 represent a broad array of interest groups including meeting and event planners, Indiana University representatives and neighborhood associations, as well as others identified by City and County officials as critical to decisions being made about the project. The Steering Committee for Accountability, with members appointed by both City and County, continues to have a role in overseeing the various upcoming stages of the Convention Center expansion project.
