Bloomington Transit Driver Diagnosed With COVID-19

Bloomington, Ind. - A Bloomington Transit (BT) driver has received a positive test result of a COVID-19 viral test. The employee began experiencing symptoms on Wednesday, July 29 and received a positive result on Saturday, August 1.  Having last worked Tuesday, July 28, the driver has been placed on paid leave to recover.

An internal contact tracing process in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines was conducted and has determined that there were no other employees or customers placed at risk of exposure by this employee.  The employee drove on Routes 1, 2, 3, and 4 from July 14 through July 28.  Protocols implemented on BT buses since March 24 including fare-free rides, rear-door entry, and a caution tape barrier installed 11 feet behind the driver have limited contact between drivers and passengers to a CDC-recommended distance.  Vehicles the employee drove have been disinfected and cleaned using special equipment.

Bloomington Transit is the Public Transportation Corporation for the City of Bloomington.  Today’s announcement marks the second reported COVID-19 diagnosis among BT staff, but the first driver.  In addition, nine City employees have reported receiving positive COVID-19 viral test results, and an additional City employee reported a positive COVID-19 antibody test result.

Together with the City of Bloomington, BT is committed to sharing information about how its operations and workforce are affected by this public health emergency and will continue to provide updates about confirmed cases among staff while protecting employees’ privacy.
