Public Presentation of the Draft Final Master Plan for Hospital Site Redevelopment

Bloomington, Ind. - The City invites residents to participate in the public presentation of the draft final master plan for the redevelopment of the current IU Health Bloomington Hospital site on Wednesday, November 18, at 6:30 p.m. The draft final master plan will be presented during the regular meeting of the Bloomington City Council. The presentation is for informational purposes and no action will be taken by City Council.

Participants may join from computer or mobile using the City Council Zoom meeting link:

The public also may access the meeting via Community Access Television Services or Facebook

The City purchased the 24-acre site at Second and Rogers from IU Health in 2018 in order to pursue redevelopment options upon the hospital’s relocation to help meet community goals for affordable housing, sustainable development, equity and inclusion.  In early 2020, the City, through its Redevelopment Commission, contracted with the architecture and urban planning firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to oversee the process of developing a master plan for the site, including intensive community engagement and site design options.  This master planning process is now in its final stages.

At the November 18 City Council meeting, SOM will present a draft of the finalized site plan. The draft final plan reflects the culmination of the master planning and design work that has taken place and public input received over the past several months. At the conclusion of the presentation, residents can visit the project website at www.bloomingtonhospitalsite.com to review the plan and leave feedback.  Feedback received will help inform the finalized master plan, which is scheduled for completion in December.

Since April, over 400 public forum participants and over 500 survey respondents have given input on the master planning effort. The master planning team is also working with the Hospital Reuse Committee, a group of more than 30 community members who have been involved with the City on this project since 2015.

IU Health Bloomington Hospital, an anchor in downtown Bloomington for over a century, will vacate the property when the new IU Health Regional Academic Health Center opens on the city's east side in 2021.
