City of Bloomington Safe and Civil City Program to Host Unapologetically Me: The Second Annual Young Women’s Leadership Summit

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Safe and Civil City Program invites middle and high school-aged female-identifying students to attend a one-day Young Women’s Leadership Summit on Thursday, November 12, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. via Zoom. “Unapologetically Me” is the theme of the second annual summit.  Although focused on African American and Latina girls, the summit is open to young women of all races and backgrounds.

Partnering to present the summit, the Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) will excuse registered middle school and high school attendees from classes during the hours of the summit. Registration for the free event, available here, must be made by November 11. 

Girls attending the summit will have the opportunity to attend the following workshops led by professionals from the fields of higher education, finance, and mental health:  

• Who Am I?

• Work It: Good Hustle & Financial Education 

• Healthy Her 

Workshop leaders include Keyandra Wigfall, program manager for the Indiana Department of Health; Dr. Teah Williams-Hampton, LCSW, a mental health therapist in private practice; and  Janessa P. Siegel M.Ed, founder and CEO of My Wealthy Wellness LLC.

The Young Women’s Leadership Summit is dedicated to championing fairness and empowering, enhancing, and nurturing children and youth through community engagement.  More broadly, the goals of the summit are to provide space and opportunity for girls of color to express themselves, learn and make memorable connections, and highlight women of color in our community who have skills and information to offer to our youth.  The summit also seeks to support girls of color by coordinating and delivering resources and information specifically addressing the needs and concerns of this traditionally underrepresented group.  

“We are very excited and eager to partner with the City of Bloomington in bringing this leadership opportunity to our middle and high school girls,” said MCCSC Assistant Superintendent Dr. Markay Winston.  “Many of our students participated in the last summit and they continue to ask when the next one will occur.  The opportunity for our girls to be exposed to female leaders within our community will serve to motivate them to achieve at high levels. It is truly an honor to support the social-emotional growth and development of our students.”
