Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety Commission Accepting Resident Proposals for Traffic Calming Projects

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Commission (BPSC) is seeking proposals for resident-led projects to install traffic-calming devices on neighborhood and residential streets.  Funding will be awarded through the Traffic Calming and Greenways (TCGP) Program to manage motor vehicle traffic through the installation of speed cushions and speed humps (in rare instances other devices may be considered). Prospective applicants must submit a Letter of Intent (LOI) on or before Sunday, February 21.  Submission information is available at https://bloomington.in.gov/tcgp.  

Letters of intent must include contact information for a minimum of two project co-organizers living in separate dwellings.  Upon receipt of a complete LOI, City staff will schedule a call or video conference with the submitter to discuss application requirements, address questions and concerns, and provide a link to the application materials.  TCGP applications will be ranked for funding on the basis of the incidence of crashes, speeding and other dangerous motorist behavior in the area, as well as information indicating the vulnerability of the area’s users--whether school children, seniors, or people with disabilities, among other categories.   

This is the first year of this grant program.  The resident-led funding application process was created as a result of the new Traffic Calming and Greenways Program policy, approved by the Bloomington Common Council in October 2020.
