ADA Anniversary Celebration Set for Community Event on Sat. Aug. 3

The City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility will commemorate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on Saturday, August 3, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will take place on the Fernandez Plaza by City Hall (401 N. Morton Street) and the Farmer’s Market, with a rain location inside the City Hall Atrium.

The event will emphasize accessibility for Bloomington residents by featuring organizations that support or are led by individuals with disabilities. Attendees can expect informational booths, resource displays, and opportunities to contribute to a more accessible community. Activities, games, prizes, and cookies will be available for participants.

Organizations represented will include:

  • Monroe County Public Library
  • Stone Belt
  • Mobility Aids Lending Library
  • Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living (SICIL)
  • Special Olympics
  • Indiana Institute on Development and Community
  • Bloomington Volunteer Network
  • and more….

The Council for Community Accessibility is a volunteer group that advocates for the interests of people with disabilities, promotes awareness, and works to develop solutions to specific challenges. The Council was founded in 1990 to advise the City of Bloomington on implementing the ADA, which became federal law that year. The ADA is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in all areas of public life, including employment, education, transportation, and all locations and events open to the general public.
