City of Bloomington’s King Commission Seeks Nominees for Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award
The City of Bloomington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission is currently accepting nominations for the 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Award. The award honors individuals, businesses, or advocacy groups that have made significant contributions to race relations, justice, and human rights. It will be presented at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration in January.
Nominations must be made online by November 30, 2024 at tinyurl.com/2025-legacy-nominations. Eligible nominees should be residents of Monroe County or local organizations with a minimum of one year of service. They must demonstrate tangible efforts toward improving community conditions and advancing race relations, racial justice, or human rights.
The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration Commission works to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by promoting diversity and advocating for justice and racial harmony within the Bloomington community. In addition to the Legacy Award, the Commission sponsors the “Day ON! Not a Day Off” volunteer initiative, the “40 Days of Peace” pledge, and the community-wide King Birthday Celebration. Year-round, the Commission also supports programs advancing racial justice and equal opportunity.
Previous recipients of the Legacy Award include Sarah McCue, Nancy Cross-Harris, Jeanetta Nelms, Marvin Q. Jones, Bloomington United, Nicole Griffin, the Indiana University Office of Diversity Education, the Rev. E.D. Butler, the Banneker History Project, Elizabeth Mitchell, the Monroe County Racial Justice Task Force, and Guy and Connie Loftman.
