Jazz From Bloomington Annual Meeting May 9th

All are invited to JfB's annual membership meeting to celebrate a decade of Jazz from Bloomington and to look ahead as they plan next year's activities and elect a new Executive Board. Our JfB-sponsored concert series kicked off this past year with Marvin Stamm, Bill Mays and Alisa Horn of the Inventions Trio; it continued with Stardust Melodies, a dance concert with the Al Cobine Big Band; the Dave Liebman group; and our annual Future of Jazz youth showcase. We also had a very successful year with the Living Link Jam Session held every Thursday at Jazz at the Station with the Marlin McKay Quartet, funded generously by Chase Bank, through the Bloomington Area Arts Council. And JfB continued its work providing musicians and curriculum for the Arts Council's Jazz in the Schools program with more than 20 free programs to Elementary Schools in Monroe and surrounding counties.

Along with the general economic crisis that all are facing, jazz musicians are finding it harder to play in the area. With this in mind, JfB is considering a number of new directions. They include the possibility of focusing on smaller, more intimate concerts with local and regional artists, as well as working more centrally to make JfB a communication hub for local jazz players and jazz fans. To gather the broadest input from members and supporters on our future direction, they invite everyone to take a few minutes and complete the online survey posted at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=Lbi7kFpEQ8_2f1lj5qwVJwIA_3d_3d.

JfB's annual meeting will take place on Saturday May 9, at 3 PM at the Gallery at the Waldron Arts Center, at 122 South Walnut, in Bloomington. All current, past AND potential JfB members are welcome. For more information, feel free to call 812/323-7057.

Artist & Volunteer Callouts

BEAD Seeks Artist to Create Artwork for City's Garage Culture Program

Image removed.

The City of Bloomington and the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District (BEAD) announce a new initiative, Garage Culture, and the first of a series of public art projects slated for installation at the City's three public parking garages.

Garage Culture incorporates the spirit of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship along with the artistic, creative and visual elements of BEAD in the rebranding and promoting the City's three Downtown parking garages to increase their visibility, encourage their usage and integrate them into BEAD. The three garages have been renamed Garage Art (4th and Walnut); Garage Band (7th and Walnut) and Garage Market (7th and College).

As part of Garage Culture, public art will be installed on the interior and exterior of the three garages in phases. Garage Band, located at 7th and Walnut, will be the first of the three to receive public art. BEAD is currently seeking an artist or artist team to create a guitar fabricated from recycled traffic signage, vehicle-related parts and other materials. The size of the finished artwork is flexible, but once installed it must make a significant visual impact on the garage. The City of Bloomington will provide access to its stock of recycled traffic supplies and other materials for the artist's use on the project. The Garage Band art project will be installed in late Fall 2009. Prospectus available at www.bloomington.in.gov/bead. To learn more about the Garage Culture program, visit www.bloomington.in.gov/parksmart.

Other BEADness:

Ten Great Reasons to Buy Local

1. Significantly more money re-circulates in Bloomington when purchases are made at locally owned, rather than nationally owned, businesses. More money stays in the community because locally owned businesses purchase from other local businesses, service providers, and farms.

2. Most new jobs are provided by locally owned businesses. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally, and in Bloomington, they provide the most new jobs to residents.

3. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of our distinctive character. The unique character of Bloomington is what brought us here and will keep us here.

4. Local business owners invest in community. Local businesses are owned by people who live locally and are more invested in the community's future.

5. Customer service is better. Local businesses are closer to the customer and hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service.

6. Competition and diversity lead to more choices. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based on the needs of their local customers and not on a national sales plan, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

7. Environmental impact is less. Shopping at locally owned businesses is more energy efficient. Locally owned businesses make more local purchases, thus reducing the transportation costs of goods.

8. Public benefits far outweigh public costs. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.

9. Local businesses encourage investment in Bloomington. A growing body of economic research shows that entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

10. Non-profits receive greater support. Non-profit organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses.
