Weekend Featured Events

Friday, March 27

WFHB Live Radio Variety Extravaganza

Remember the days when the radio announcer would say "Who's this on the Wolfman telephone?"

On Friday, March 27th from 8 to 10 pm Bloomington's historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater will become a time portal to another age; the age of "Border Radio" when high power stations on the Mexican border could be heard over large areas of the U.S. from the 1940's to the '70's.

Musical guests will include Nashville, Tennessee recording duo Jeni and Billy. "Jeni's singing sounds to me like a cross between the young Hazel Dickens and the young Iris DeMent," says Si Kahn, performing songwriter & activist. "The songs . . . range from raw and powerful to sweet and funny. The instrumental work . . . is excellent; the harmony singing is just what you'd want it to be."

The local musical celebrity roster for this show includes singer/songwriter Cathi Norton; sax man and vocalist Dennis Riggins and His Firehouse Swing Things; blues guitarist and singer Jason Fickel; and Art "the Hoagy Man" Heckman, and a special Firehouse Gospel Group.

Specially written skits will be performed by a local cast of radio performers, with live sound effects and hilarity you won't want to miss.

The show will also be broadcast live on WHFB, at 91.3 and 98.1 FM in Bloomington, at 106.3 in Ellettsville, at 100.7 for Brown County and online at wfhb.org as well as on CATS television.

Tickets are available at the Sunrise box office on Kirkwood, at all three Bloomingfood locations, and at www.wfhb.org. Tickets are $10.

Fact/Simile at Fuller Projects

The Fuller Projects gallery at Indiana University proudly presents a two-person show, "Fact/Simile," by Los Angeles-based artists, Alison Byrnes and Robert Moya.

As painters, both Alison Byrnes and Robert Moya inevitably deal with the element of representation. Alison makes funny paintings about history by translating historical text into visual articulations. Specifically, she is interested in portraying the problem of historiography itself. Robert builds up layers of paint, which he then cuts into and collages. His final product employs the use of paint as paint itself, in non-representational compositions.

In Fact/Simile, Alison and Robert challenge the idea of a painting as being a final note, whether representational, or non-objective. In coming together for the show, both artists decided to start a small body of work by creating a seed painting, and agreed to base all additional works on that painting, so that Alison's works become representations of a representation, and Robert's become representations of a non-representation. In Fact/Simile, two artists with seemingly disparate ways of using paint create a dialogue that creatively deals with an issue upon which all painters take a stance: representation.

An opening reception will be held from 8:00-10:00pm at The Fuller Projects

525 E 9th Street.

Other BEADness:

Ten Great Reasons to Buy Local

1. Significantly more money re-circulates in Bloomington when purchases are made at locally owned, rather than nationally owned, businesses. More money stays in the community because locally owned businesses purchase from other local businesses, service providers, and farms.

2. Most new jobs are provided by locally owned businesses. Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally, and in Bloomington, they provide the most new jobs to residents.

3. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of our distinctive character. The unique character of Bloomington is what brought us here and will keep us here.

4. Local business owners invest in community. Local businesses are owned by people who live locally and are more invested in the community's future.

5. Customer service is better. Local businesses are closer to the customer and hire people with more specific product expertise for better customer service.

6. Competition and diversity lead to more choices. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based on the needs of their local customers and not on a national sales plan, guarantees a much broader range of product choices.

7. Environmental impact is less. Shopping at locally owned businesses is more energy efficient. Locally owned businesses make more local purchases, thus reducing the transportation costs of goods.

8. Public benefits far outweigh public costs. Local businesses require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community.

9. Local businesses encourage investment in Bloomington. A growing body of economic research shows that entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to settle in communities that preserve their one-of-a-kind businesses and distinctive character.

10. Non-profits receive greater support. Non-profit organizations receive an average 350% greater support from local business owners than they do from non-locally owned businesses.
