Griffy Lake Nature Preserve Wins Conservation Award

Bloomington, Ind. - [The Indiana Lakes Management Society (ILMS),|http://www.indianalakes.org/] a not-for-profit organization committed to protecting and saving Indiana lakes for future generations, at their annual conference March 2 presented Bloomington Parks and Recreation's Griffy Lake Nature Preserve with an "Outstanding Group" Award.

According to ILMS, the work done by Bloomington Parks and Recreation in the comprehensive management of Griffy Lake was especially noteworthy.

ILMS in a prepared statement said the long-term commitment Bloomington Parks and Recreation has made to monitoring water quality in Griffy Lake, managing invasive plant species, hosting educational events, and dredging to ensure the quality of boating and fishing on the lake reflects the value the Department places on this unique community resource.

According to ILMS, the Parks and Recreation Department goes above and beyond to maintain the natural wetlands ecosystem and promote healthy lake shorelines, and to demonstrate the value of aquatic resources.

Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department Natural Resources Coordinator Elizabeth Tompkins accepted the award on behalf of Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. "We are honored to receive the Outstanding Group Award from ILMS," Tompkins said. "The Department's natural resources area is dedicated to continuing to manage Griffy Lake and its surrounding nature preserve for the benefit of and enjoyment by future generations."

Recreation opportunities are plentiful at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. The Griffy Lake boathouse, 3300 N. Headley Rd., is open on weekends in April, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Summer hours begin May 1, when the boathouse opens daily from 8 a.m. through 8 p.m. Rowboat, canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals are available for $8 per hour. Fishing is permitted at Griffy Lake with a valid Indiana fishing license. Boat motors are restricted to electric trolling motors only; private watercraft must have a $7 daily launch permit or a $70 annual launch permit to use Griffy Lake.
