Adopt-a-Greenspace

Adopt-a-Greenspace (AAG) is an all-volunteer program that offers the opportunity to actively address Monroe County's invasive plant issues. Parks and Recreation staff provide the necessary training in invasive plant identification and equip volunteers to proactively monitor and remove impeding plants within their adopted areas.

Various parcels of land are available for adoption and are customizable by request. Adopting individuals/groups are encouraged to select a parcel of land that is of personal interest or value to them.

Volunteers commit to adopting a land section for one year. Applications for the May 2024-April 2025 adoption period are now being accepted on a rolling basis. Objectives for the Adopt-a-Greenspace program are:

• ensure the success of native plants
• educate the general public about invasive plants and the harm they cause our ecosystem
• unite those interested in responsible land management practices through maintenance of natural spaces and public education
• promote land stewardship, physical fitness, and community
   

Volunteers who choose to adopt a greenspace receive training and instruction on proper identification and removal techniques. All necessary tools and equipment are provided. The only prerequisite to adopt a greenspace is to have a genuine concern for the well-being of our natural resources.

Garden clubs, Scout troops, youth groups, individuals, special interest clubs, church organizations, families, neighborhood associations, students, school organizations, and private industries are encouraged to get involved. Adopt-a-Greenspace volunteers must be at least 12 years of age.

Volunteers are expected to:

• attend an online Adopt-a-Greenspace orientation or watch the recording
• meet with Parks and Recreation staff to receive hands-on training after completing the online orientation
• proactively monitor and remove impeding plants within adopted area monthly
• submit monthly online reports
• attend quarterly training on plant identification and eradication methods
   

The Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department will:

• orient individuals and/or groups to the Adopt-a-Greenspace program
• provide basic invasive plant identification and eradication training
• provide tools and arrange for the use of maintenance equipment
