• Join an event or make observations on your own using the iNaturalist app. With the iNaturalist app, simply take a picture of a pollinator (bee, butterfly, hummingbird, etc.) or plant, and the online community will help identify the species. You can participate by exploring nature and wildlife throughout the greater Bloomington area. All observations made throughout Bloomington and surrounding areas support current and future data-driven management of urban, landscaped, and natural areas.

Bee City USA Bloomington Pollinator Week Events

All events are free and open to the public.

• Pollinator Week Pop-up Exhibition June 18 from 2 until 4 p.m. at the Lilly Library, 1200 E. 7th St. on the Indiana University campus
• Documentary screening: "My Garden of a Thousand Bees" June 21 from 12:30 until 2 p.m. at the Monroe County Public Library, 303 E. Kirkwood Ave.
• Green Drinks Bloomington: The cypress firefly with Sycamore Land Trust land stewardship manager Chris Fox, June 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Upland Brewing, 350 W. 11th St. 

About Native Bees

Bees transfer pollen between flowers, enabling the incredible diversity of plants on our planet to flower and fruit. Pollinators are a keystone species in essentially every ecosystem on earth, enabling the reproduction of over 85% of all flowering plants and 67% of agricultural crops. In addition to the well known honey bee (Apis mellifera), a species brought to the United States from Europe, there are more than 20,000 described species of bees globally, and around 3,600 species of bees native to the United States. While bees are the most important pollinator, butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, wasps, bats, and hummingbirds also contribute to pollination.

Pollinator Decline

Research has shown significant declines in native pollinator population sizes and ranges globally with up to 40% of pollinator species on earth at risk of extinction in the coming years as a result of habitat loss, the use of harmful pesticides, and climate change.

Thinking globally and acting locally, Bee City USA provides a framework for communities to work together to conserve native pollinators by increasing the abundance of native plants, providing nest sites, and reducing the use of pesticides.
