Urban Greenspace Landscaping Specialist

Position Description

Employee is responsible for the direct supervision, training, safety, equipment operation, and performance of the Urban
Greenspace (UGS) Landscaping crew, performing a wide variety of grounds keeping and landscaping maintenance duties.

Additional duties include but are not limited to:

  • Primary responsibility is watering and maintaining native plant/shrub/tree installations and downtown planters.
  • Sets up roadside safety zones and is alert to and conscientious of traffic and pedestrians.
  • Performs seasonal planting/transplanting and maintenance of plant material, flowers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Monitors and controls weeds/invasive plants using multiple methods, including herbicide application.
  • Performs mulching, weeding/mowing, litter pickup, and invasive plant removal.
  • Performs regular maintenance of hand tools and keeps vehicles clean.
  • Maintain up to date records of daily activities digitally via a Google form.
  • Other duties as assigned (e.g. median cleanup, assist Operations and Cemetery Grounds crews, etc.)

Training/Special Skills

  • Possess or obtain Office of Indiana State Chemist (OISC) Certified Pesticide Applicator/Registered Technician License within 30 days of hire
  • Working knowledge of annual and perennial plants (esp. native and invasive species), pruning, and plant installation.
  • Must have the ability to properly assign the necessary resources to complete the job assignment in an efficient and safe manner and in compliance with maintenance standards.
  • Skills in the safe operation of trucks, tractors, weed eaters, chainsaws, power tools, hand tools, and other related landscaping equipment.
  • Working knowledge of mechanics and ability to perform safety/maintenance equipment inspections.
  • Must be self-motivated, and have the ability to interact and work well with the public and other employees.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, have the ability to follow oral and written direction, and be capable of performing physically demanding work.
  • Required: Must have a valid driver’s license and maintain a good driving record 

Physical Effort

Must be in good physical condition. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is exerted by the employee in the setup and operation of equipment; including frequent bending, stooping, and the movement of extremities to operate equipment and perform work tasks. Moderate to strenuous physical effort is frequently required for extended periods of time in the lifting and loading of equipment and tools. Employee must be physically capable of lifting weights in excess of 50 pounds.

Working Conditions

Employee performs duties in and out of doors, in varying weather conditions, and is periodically exposed to work sites with traffic, noise, dust, and vehicle and equipment fumes.

Hours

8 hours per day, 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, except holiday weeks and during periods of inclement weather.

Season

March-November. Term of employment not to exceed 9 months.

Salary

$19.85 per hour
