The Challenge

The City of Bloomington wanted to reduce the number of single occupancy vehicles (SOVs) through the implementation of a new Transportation Demand Management (TDM) system. TDM is a way for local governments to provide access to transportation alternatives. Promoting mobility options not only helps residents navigate their community, but also provides environmentally-conscious options to reduce carbon emissions.

The Idea

Go Bloomington is the new (TDM) program implemented by the City of Bloomington in 2022. This initiative provides people with education on the transportation alternatives available to them while reducing the amount of SOVs on the road. These alternatives include walking, cycling, using public transportation, carpooling, vanpooling, teleworking, and micro mobility options such as e-scooters and e-bikes.

How might a resident, student, employer, or visitor discover the many transportation options available to them in Bloomington whilst reducing their carbon footprint and alleviating traffic?

Introducing… Go Bloomington!

Users of Go Bloomington can plan their commute by providing their start and end destinations. From there, users choose their mobility option of choice and see a map of how to get there, or be matched with others for carpools or vanpools. Go Bloomington is easy to use on laptop, smartphone, and also features a commute tracker by RideAmigos. This tool allows users to see how much money is saved by choosing an alternative mobility option. Users can also see how much carbon is saved by choosing an eco-friendly option.

Advertisements for Go Bloomington debuted on city buses beginning and were used as a backdrop for the launch event at City Hall on September 6, 2022. The Go Bloomington campaign includes bus ads, utility leaflets, banners on 10th street, the 7-line bikeway, the courthouse square, and on the B-line. Branding for Go Bloomington is also featured on new Lime e-bikes, online pay-per-click ads, and rack cards.

The Cost

Go Bloomington launched with a marketing budget of $60,000 - with local funding provided by the City of Bloomington and federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA).

The Benefit

The Go Bloomington initiative will challenge people that work in the city to think of the full range of transportation options available to them. Furthermore, it will represent an initiative to reduce the amount of SOVs on the road, and thus the amount of carbon emitted.  Projected benefits include a reduction in traffic congestion, increased parking capacity, reduction in air pollution, a more bicycle and pedestrian-friendly community, and increased awareness of our collective climate impact.
