Project Information

To increase safety, connectivity, and accessibility along the Indiana Avenue corridor between downtown and the Indiana University campus, the City of Bloomington is considering protected bike infrastructure, pedestrian crossing improvements, and bus stop improvements.

Project Area

Why Indiana Avenue?

  • This corridor has experienced one of the highest amounts of severe traffic collisions in recent years within Bloomington. Since 2018, there have been nine traffic collisions along this corridor resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. With a codified goal of eliminating all traffic deaths and severe injuries on City of Bloomington roadways by 2039, there is a duty to act now to improve safety for all road users.

  • Indiana Avenue is an essential connector for all residents, bridging downtown and the Indiana University campus. In its current state, there are gaps in the bicycle, pedestrian, and transit network that can be improved. All road users should be able to access these areas safely of Bloomington regardless of transportation mode.

Potential Benefits

  • Increased safety for all road users: Studies show that protected bike lanes not only provide safety benefits for cyclists, but for all road users including drivers and pedestrians.

  • Connectivity: A southbound connection along Indiana Avenue for cyclists would provide much needed convenience and efficiency to travel to popular destinations.

  • Accessibility and improved pedestrian crossings: In conjunction with a separate ongoing project aimed to improve pedestrian infrastructure along this corridor, this project will increase safety and accessibility for pedestrians crossing Indiana Avenue.

  • A healthier and more sustainable Bloomington: Case studies around the world have shown that increased low-stress bike infrastructure leads to more residents cycling in their normal routine, which creates healthier habits and a more sustainable city.
