City Names New Safe and Civil City Program Director

Bloomington, Ind. - Shatoyia Moss assumed duties earlier this week as the new Safe and Civil City Director in the City of Bloomington Community and Family Resources Department (CFRD). In this role, Moss will assist department Director Beverly Calender-Anderson in the development and implementation of goals and strategies supporting inclusion and equity, public safety education, and community response.

The Safe and Civil City Director serves as a liaison to a number of commissions and groups, including the Commission on the Status of Black Males, the Commission on the Status of Children and Youth, the Sister Cities Committee, the Latino Outreach program, and the LGBT community.  The position was created in 2002.

“We are confident about Shatoyia’s stewardship of the Safe and Civil City program,” said Mayor John Hamilton.  “As the youngest person to helm the program, and with her leadership experience with the young people of our community, she will bring a much-needed perspective to the issues we face now and challenges on the horizon.”

Moss worked as a part-time Program Management Specialist in CFRD before being named to her current position. Previous positions include Director of Indiana Kids, a mentoring and tutoring program at Indiana University, and Events and Athletic Director of Girls, Inc. A 2013 graduate of Indiana University Moss holds a B.S. in General Studies with minors in Gender Studies, Human Sexuality and Human Development & Family Studies. She is one of two vice presidents, webmaster, and chair of youth initiatives for the Bloomington Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Moss succeeds Rafi Hasan, who left the position in August 2017 when he accepted the position of Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator for Monroe County Community School Corporation. Moss’s annual salary is $46, 203.

“I am excited and enthusiastic to be working for the people of Bloomington,” said Moss, “connecting with residents, students, organizations, and community partners with high hopes of using my skills and platform to make positive change.”
