Bloomington Parks and Recreation, IU Health Host Annual 50+ Expo May 8

Bloomington, Ind. - The Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department and partner IU Health Bloomington Hospital present the annual 50+ Expo May 8 from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Twin Lakes Recreation Center, 1700 W. Bloomfield Rd. Admission is free.

The 50+ Expo has evolved over the past 40+ years as a showcase for services, screenings, recreational and educational opportunities, and products for seniors of all ages, from those preparing for retirement to those well into their golden years. Ninety exhibitors are scheduled to attend the 50+ Expo to share information on active aging, health care and wellness, volunteer opportunities, assisted and senior living facilities, insurance and investing, and more.

"We have heard from both visitors and exhibitors about the types of things they're looking for at our event, so we have incorporated activities and exhibitors that have universal appeal," said Bill Ream, 50+ Expo coordinator. "'Changing the way we age' is a theme of this year's expo, which is why we've included displays for active, engaged retirees, and exhibitors whose services are geared toward seniors and caregivers."

During the expo, the Bloomington Police Department will be collecting unwanted or expired medications for disposal. Community clubs representing music, creative building, recreation, and leisure have their own display area at the expo.

Nine exhibitors throughout the expo will offer free wellness screenings. Screening and health resource providers scheduled to take part in the wellness screenings include the following:

  • Touchstone Wellness Center, chair massage and acupuncture

  • 1st Care Home Health Services, balance screening

  • Indiana University Speech and Hearing Clinic, hearing screening

  • IU Health-Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation, COPD, OSA, blood pressure

  • IU Health-Monroe County Public Health Clinic, diabetes screening, blood pressure

  • IU Health-Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine Center, Rock Steady boxing

  • Indiana University School of Optometry, visual acuity

  • Young Living Essential Oils, iTOVi scans

  • Osmon Chiropractic Center, spinal health screening

The 50+ Expo is made possible through the generous support of contributors Premier Hospice & Palliative Care, Trilogy Health Services LLC, and WFHB.

“Bloomington’s seniors are a big part of our city and our ever-changing culture,” said Mayor John Hamilton.  “We’re glad to partner with IU Health and the expo’s contributors to showcase the many opportunities and facilities we have in Bloomington that facilitate healthy and rewarding retirement years.”

Free parking is available in the Twin Lakes Recreation Center and Twin Lakes Sports Park parking lots. Safe, convenient parking shuttles provide door-to-door transportation between the parking lot and the TLRC.
