City to Celebrate 32nd Anniversary of Americans With Disabilities Act

Bloomington, Ind. - The City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) invites community members to a celebration of the 32nd anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The event will also celebrate the anniversary of Bloomington’s Council for Community Accessibility (CCA), founded in 1990 shortly before the ADA was signed into law. This event is free and open to the public.  

When: Saturday, July 30 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Where: Main Plaza of City Hall (401 N. Morton Street, next to the Farmers’ Market)

The celebration will feature inclusive, interactive activities for attendees of all ages and abilities, with chocolate chip cookies from Baked! for those who complete some of the activities, provided by the following organizations:

• LIFEDesigns 
• Bloomington Human Rights Commission
• Down Syndrome Family Connection
• The Arc of Indiana
• ResCare
• PALS (People & Animal Learning Services) 
• SICIL (The Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living)
• MALL (Mobility Aids Lending Library)

The Americans with Disabilities Act ensures civil rights for individuals living with mental or physical disabilities, and necessitates accommodations for those people. The ADA prohibits discrimination in many areas, including employment, transportation, public accommodations, communications, and access to state and local government programs and services.

The CCA is a volunteer group serving the Bloomington community by promoting awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities, working to develop solutions to problems of accessibility in the community, and advocating for the interests of people with disabilities. The CCA is an open board; any member of the public may attend and participate at CCA meetings.
