The Griffy Lake boathouse opens for the 2021 season on Saturday, April 3.

Boat Rentals

The Griffy Lake boathouse has canoe, kayak, and stand-up paddleboard rentals available beginning Saturday, April 3. Due to precautions related to the spread of COVID-19, only call-ahead boat reservations are accepted. To rent a canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard and reserve a time slot, call the Griffy Lake Boathouse directly at (812) 349-3732 during business hours. To inquire about reservations outside of normal operating hours, email Please understand that email requests may take 24-48 hours to confirm. In your email, please provide:

  1. Your name
  2. A telephone number where you can be reached
  3. The type of watercraft you would like (canoe, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard)
  4. The day, date, and time you would like to rent watercraft
  5. The number of watercraft you would like
  6. The amount of time you would like to rent the watercraft (1 or 2 hours; max is 2 hours)
  7. Indicate if you will be accompanied by a youth age 14 years or younger


All watercraft rent for $8 per hour.

Plan to arrive at least five minutes before your scheduled rental time. Watercraft, paddles, and life jackets are provided. The use of face coverings is required while checking in. You can pay for your boat rental when you arrive with cash, check, or a credit/debit card. 

Rented watercraft returned to the boathouse after closing are subject to a minimum $20 late fee. A minimum $50 replacement fee is charged for lost, stolen, or damaged rental items.

Private Watercraft Launching and Permits

Please note that Griffy Lake is owned and managed by the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department. It is not a Department of Natural Resources facility, and a DNR non-motorized watercraft permit is not valid for the use of privately owned watercraft. To launch a canoe, kayak, jon boat, or other private watercraft at Griffy Lake (motors limited to electric trolling motors only), you need either a daily launch permit ($8) or an annual launch permit ($80). Launch permits may be purchased at the boathouse during open hours, or at City Hall Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

A valid Indiana fishing license is required to fish at Griffy Lake.

Please note shoreline launching is NOT permitted. All boats, including canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards, must be launched from the ramp located at the boathouse.

Boathouse Hours

April and October, Saturday and Sunday only, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
May-August: Daily, 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
September: Daily, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.
November-March: Closed

Boating on Griffy Lake

Griffy Lake accepts cash, checks, and credit and debit cards (MasterCard, Visa and Discover only) for boat rentals, and for the purchase of 10-Rental passes and private boat launch fees. Griffy's pier, as well as its canoe and kayak launch, is accessible.

Two-hour limit on holidays and weekends.

10-Rental Pass
Good for 10, one-hour watercraft rentals. Available for purchase at the boathouse during regular business hours.
