Safe Routes Curriculum 

These lessons were developed by the City of Bloomington for elementary students in the Bloomington community. It is organized into three grade bands (K-2, 3-4, and 5-6) and is designed to be revisited as students progress through elementary school. The curriculum includes five lessons, each featuring discussion questions, a presentation, a book suggestion, and optional activities to reinforce the lesson.

Event and Activity Resources

  • Dedicate time to the Safe Routes curriculum 
  • Borrow books or request donations from the Safe Routes to School Library
  • Implement classroom or school-wide activities from the Safe Routes to School Activity Book
  • Request class engagement from our available class trainings 
  • Borrow the bike blender and Solving Fun safe routes puzzle set 
  • Request free swag and handouts (stickers, bike lights/backpack lights, walking school bus materials, bike bus materials)
  • Request guest walk/bike leaders for group walks
  • Request a bike rodeo for third-grade students, a one-day event where students learn basic biking skills. Bikes are provided, and the event is facilitated through a partnership with IU Health.
  • Request or print copies of the take-home workbook (coming soon)

Event Planning Guide

Safe Routes to School participation can look different at every school. Some schools choose to host large events, while others focus on classroom activities, family outreach, or ongoing encouragement programs. This guide highlights common Safe Routes to School activities and resources available to Bloomington schools.
