The Challenge

The Planning and Transportation Department needed a better way to show the physical improvements made to roads, parks, and trails from North Dunn Street to Old SR 37. The team knew plain photos taken at eye level wouldn’t do justice to the thousands of dollars in improved infrastructure that has been invested in the area in recent years.

The Idea

A picture is worth a thousand words, but how about a video? In any organization, communicating information to colleagues, customers, or residents can be a challenge. This is especially true for demonstrating how a process, structure, or design will change. When words can’t tell the full story, sometimes all you need is a flying robot to take your communications to new heights - literally!

The Planning and Transportation Department used a drone to capture a bird’s eye view of the route to provide extra context, information, and visual depth toward the project.

The Cost

This innovative use of drone footage required only a few hours of staff time to record and edit footage.

The Benefit

Still images or construction renderings only offer so much when it comes to visualizing large-scale projects. The use of drone footage provides residents with a comprehensive view of the City’s investment toward parks and trails near Griffy Lake and Lower Cascades Park. This innovation certainly opens the door for future creative uses of drone footage.
