Help chart a path to Bloomington’s zero carbon future by joining “Zero In Bloomington!” The City of Bloomington launched the Zero In Bloomington initiative to help individuals and groups track their progress toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions in support of Bloomington’s community-wide climate goal to reduce emissions 25% by 2030. Zero In Bloomington is an interactive, online platform that provides Bloomington residents with locally specific recommendations to reduce emissions. Users can share their activities and inspire each other on the community discussion page.

2025 Spring into Sustainability Challenge
March 1 - 31, 2025
The City of Bloomington turned sustainability into a friendly competition with the first annual Spring into Sustainability Challenge on the Zero in Bloomington platform. From March 1–31, 2025, local organizations and community groups competed to complete climate-friendly actions, track their progress, and earn recognition—all while helping Bloomington meet its climate goals.
We had 53 participants representing 10 different community groups who, overall, logged 547 sustainable actions during the month of March! We hope this was a fun opportunity to explore sustainable lifestyle changes, and hope that some of these sustainable habits stick into the future. Our Top 5 groups, who will be receiving cash prizes for their efforts, are as follows:
- Alpha Delta Pi
- Novus Women's Cycling
- Citizens Climate Lobby of South Central Indiana
- Bloominglabs
- Epsilon Nu Tau
Come celebrate the winners with us at Bloomington’s Earth Day 2025 celebration on April 19!
News on future challenges will be coming soon.

Why participate in Zero In Bloomington?
The City of Bloomington has an established commitment to sustainability and climate action, as laid out in the 2021 Climate Action Plan. Zero In Bloomington supports community-driven action to increase climate resiliency and meet climate goals outlined in Bloomington’s sustainability vision. In addition to helping achieve emissions reductions of 25% by 2030, through Zero In Bloomington you can help work towards community-based initiatives outlined in the Bloomington Climate Action Plan. Explore the goals of the plan and what you can do on Bloomington's Climate Action Dashboard.
Individuals, households, and groups can sign up and use the platform at any time, all the time, throughout the year. The City will host structured, scheduled challenges occasionally to provide a fun experience and recognize participants for their efforts. Organizations can host their own challenges, too.
How to register/participate:
1. Start by creating a new account for your household, and selecting your district*
Additional registration instructions are available in this slideshow document.
*If you or somebody you know lives outside of Monroe County and would like to utilize the platform to track their own climate commitment performance, see instructions attached for Non-Resident Registration.
2. Complete an energy profile for your household
By completing the energy profile, Zero In Bloomington will provide you with an overview of your household's emissions and how your energy usage compares to an average Bloomington household, as well as custom recommendations of high impact emissions reductions actions based on your household characteristics.
3. Start completing actions!
There are over 100 action items on the Zero In Bloomington site to choose from. Filter and choose actions items based on emissions impact, savings/year, difficulty, cost, and/or time required to see which actions you are able to start implementing. There are 7 categories of action types, including Be Energy Smart, Clean Energy Home, Shift Your Ride, Eat Green & Waste Less, Be Water Wise, Community & Learning, and Resilience.
4. Invite others to join you
You can build a team of households to compete together against other teams and increase our community’s collective impact. Get your neighborhoods and community groups to register to expand collective climate action.
