Susan Sandberg is a 16-year veteran on the Bloomington City Council. She began public service on the Council in January, 2007 elected by caucus to serve the remaining year of an at-large term. Susan was elected to the at-large seat in 2008 and re-elected in 2012, 2016 and 2020. During her four terms on Council, she has been elected president four times in 2008, 2011, 2017 and currently in 2022. Susan served as a member of the Bloomington Utilities Service Board prior to her election to Council. She initiated and co-facilitated the Affordable Living Committee research and report released in 2019 titled Working Harder, Falling Behind.
After 16 years at Indiana University, Susan retired in October, 2020. She was in student services as a career consultant and also was a coordinator with the Arts Administration program at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Susan was a case manager with children in need of services through Head Start, Greene and Monroe County Offices of Family and Children in Child Protective Services, and has served with a foster care agency, The Villages.
Community volunteer service includes being Board President of the South Central Community Action Program, an advisor to Project Care and Project Hope through Centerstone, and a volunteer with New Leaf/New Life, providing educational and support services to the Addicts in Recovery program both inside and out of the Monroe County Correctional Center.
Council priorities included basic essential city services related to public safety and infrastructure, affordable housing and neighborhood stabilization, economic development, support for arts and culture, and civil public engagement. Susan serves on the Public Safety Local Income Tax Council, is chair of the Jack Hopkins Social Services Committee, Community Development Block Grants Committee for Social Services, and is a long-time supporter of the Bloomington Entertainment and Arts District. She served as the representative to the Plan Commission for three years during the development of the Comprehensive Plan and Unified Development Ordinance
revisions from 2018-2020.
Susan is an IU alumna who graduated in 1990 with a BA in psychology. She was a member of the IU Singing Hoosiers from 1970-74, and continues to perform as a local musician with the ukulele band, The UkeTones.
