Emailed explanation of the Chimney swift project to Mr. Scully.
Other: Just a question. There are three structures on the old goat farm by the Jackson Creek Trail. They're maybe 10-12 feet tall and 2 feet square. Can you tell me what they are? Are they some kind of bird nesting sites? Thanks for any help. -a curious walker
Emailed explanation of the Chimney swift project to Mr. Scully.
Hi John- Great question! The three structures are Chimney Swift Towers. This was a joint project between the Parks Department and the Sassafras Audubon Society. Chimney swifts are fast-flying migratory birds that weigh less than an ounce. Chimney swifts used to root and nest in large hollow trees but they moved into chimneys as large trees became scarce. Modern chimneys are not as swift friendly as they used to be so it is increasingly harder for swifts to find suitable lodging. This project was done in order to help reverse the trend and raise awareness about the plight of this important species and what we can do to help the survive. Enjoy your walk. Paula
